Knox SRO Renovation
Knox SRO Renovation: A Renewal For Our Sixth Street Neighborhood
We’re thrilled to share exciting news: the Knox SRO renovation is now fully complete. After years of planning, partnership, and hard work, all eight floors and 140 units of this historic residence in San Francisco’s South ofMarket neighborhood have been completely renovated.
This milestone represents more than just building improvements — it’s are commitment to TODCO’s mission of preserving affordable housing, supporting our residents, and strengthening the heart of Sixth Street.
A Building-Wide Transformation
The Knox SRO renovation was an ambitious project that touched every corner of the building.
Highlights of the improvements include:
Modernized Units: Each home now features updated appliances, fixtures, and finishes, giving residents the comfort, dignity, and functionality they deserve.
Life Safety Upgrades: The installation of a state-of-the-art life safety system ensures the well-being and security of every resident.
New Roof and Windows: These critical upgrades improve energy efficiency, reduce maintenance needs, and enhance the building’s resilience for years to come.
Capital Improvements: From common areas to infrastructure, the Knox SRO has been renewed to provide a stronger foundation for the entire community.
Supporting Residents Through theProcess
Renovations of this scale can be disruptive, but TODCO’s team worked diligently to keep residents connected to their community throughout the process. Many residents were temporarily relocated within the Knox itself, ensuring that they could remain close to their neighbors and familiar surroundings.
As each floor was completed, residents returned to their renovated homes— greeted with not only upgraded living spaces but also staff support to help them adjust to their new appliances and amenities. This careful, resident-first approach was central to our vision for the project.
A Shared Effort and Partnership
None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of our partners. The Low-Income Investment Fund (LIIF) played a critical role, working with TODCO to close on a $12 million construction bridge loan that made the rehabilitation possible. Their investment reflects a shared commitment to keeping San Francisco affordable for the people who call it home.
We are also grateful to the dedicated construction teams, staff, and community partners who worked tirelessly to bring this vision to life. Most importantly, we thank the Knox residents themselves for their patience, cooperation, and resilience throughout the renovation journey.
Looking Ahead
With the Knox SRO renovation complete, residents now have renewed homes that will remain affordable and stable for decades to come. This project stands as a testament to TODCO’s belief that investing in existing affordable housing is just as important as creating new homes — both are essential to preserving the fabric of San Francisco’s neighborhoods.
The Knox SRO is now fully prepared to serve as a safe, dignified, and affordable home for generations of Sixth Street residents to come.
“The Knox SRO renovation delivers on our mission: protecting affordability, strengthening community, and improving the quality of life for our residents on Sixth Street.”
