John Elberling’s Legacy
It is with great sadness, and an even greater determination to continue his life-long mission, that we inform you of the passing of our long-time President and founder, John Elberling.
John stood for the simple idea that every human being has a place where they belong. Not just in a stable home, but in a neighborhood with green parks, thriving small businesses, good schools, and vibrant arts & culture. A place that was welcoming and affordable – a place rooted in community.
For nearly 50 years John fought to make sure that the residents of the South of Market could stay in their homes and he stood firm until his dying day against the idea that displacement was any form of progress. While others saw the neighborhood as a target for “redevelopment,” John saw people he revered, and he never stopped fighting for them and building a shared community with them.
John’s vision built thousands of permanent homes, protecting neighborhood residents from rising rents and the constant threat of being pushed out of the city they loved. He was a community planner who advocated for spaces and places that shaped the city’s eastern neighborhoods. He was also a champion for the arts and cultural preservation, which he believed was essential to a community’s sense of identity.
Most of all, John was a community organizer in his heart and head. He believed that people were the soul of San Francisco’s neighborhoods. And to his last days he never stopped fighting for that soul and working to protect more San Franciscans from the powerful forces reshaping our City at the expense of its people. That is his true legacy.
John believed San Francisco belonged to all San Franciscans, not just the wealthy and powerful. He saw that each of us contributes to making San Francisco the magical place it was, is, and can remain if we continue his fight.
