Celebrating 10 Years
Celebrating 10 Years: The 6th on 7th Gallery IN San Francisco’s South of Market Neighborhood
A Decade of Creativity, Community, and Transformation
May 13th, 2024
San Francisco, CA — The 6th on 7th Photography Workshop & Gallery proudly celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the Gallery with an opening photo reception on Saturday May 4th, 2024. Nestled inside the historic Hotel Isabel, the gallery space has been a hub for creativity, community, and artistic exploration.
The Beginning of the 6th on 7th Gallery
On May 1st, 2014, 6th on 7th Photography Workshop & Gallery held its inaugural photography show at the Hotel Isabel. The space was graciously granted to us by TODCO (Tenants and Owners Development Corporation), our fiscal sponsor at the time. Little did we know that this would be the beginning to a decade-long journey of artistic expression. Although the beginning of the Gallery was in 2014 the Photography Workshop was founded in 1991/2 making the Photography Workshop 33 years old this year (2024).
Guest Artist Spotlight: Ted Westby
Ted Westby
Renowned artist Ted Westby took center stage during the anniversary celebration. His recent project delved into the raw, unfiltered side of image-making. Armed with a small point-and-shoot camera, Westby captured high-end portraits displayed on computer screens. The result? A captivating blend of gritty textures, random light interference, and unpolished glamour shots—an ode to the lo-fi aesthetic.
Group Shows That Transcend Boundaries
1. Gridlock
Inspired by the iconic work of Bernd and Hill Becher, participants in the “Gridlock” exhibition created thematic grids. From intimate portraits to street objects and architectural marvels, each image contributed to a collective narrative. The whole truly became greater than the sum of its parts.
2. Fixing a Shadow
In the pre-digital era, photography was often described as “fixing a shadow.” Darkrooms, chemicals, and the absence of light played pivotal roles. For the “Fixing a Shadow” group show, artists reveled in shadows, shapes, and the mysterious allure of analog photography.
3. Fabricating Evidence
The “Fabricating Evidence” exhibit challenged participants to explore the forensic aspects of photography. Imaginary crimes, mysterious artifacts, and handcrafted detective boards filled the gallery. Each photo became a piece of evidence, inviting viewers to unravel hidden narratives.
